HIGHLIGHTS
MALIBU, Calif. -- The Pepperdine women's volleyball team gave fans quite a show this Saturday afternoon, as the Waves put up a good fight against West Coast Conference opponents San Diego. The home team eventually fell in three sets, 25-17, 25-20 and 27-25 to drop the conference match-up. The Waves are now 13-10 overall and 4-6 in WCC competition.
As a team, the Waves produces 30 kills, 27 assists, 55 digs and 22 block assists. Freshman middle blocker Tarah Wylie (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral HS) led the Waves with eight kills on the night, and with two errors in 23 attempts posted a .261 hitting percentage. She also amassed six blocks in the match.
Junior Brooke Honeycutt (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS) and freshmen Nikki Lyons (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas HS) and Jenna Tunnell (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS) each posted five kills apiece. Honeycutt also picked up five big blocks, Lyons was good for seven digs and Tunnell added four blocks and seven digs towards the effort.
Seniors Becca Strehlow (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS/UCLA) and Lara Dykstra (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union HS/Nebraska) also put in good performances. Strehlow tabbed her 12th double-double of the season with 22 assists and 10 digs, while also tallying four blocks and four kills in an all-around effort. Dykstra led the team with 11 digs and helped with three assists on the day. Sophomore Ashley Morgan (Anaheim Hills, Calif./Canyon HS) posted the team-high two aces throughout the match, while adding four digs towards the effort.
In the first set, the Toreros advanced to a 7-2 lead to start, but the Waves were close behind and put up a 7-3 run over the visitors to close the gap and trail by one-point, 10-9. The two teams battled evenly, eventually reaching the 15-15 tie mark. San Diego began to pull away once again, however, picking up a first set victory 25-17 to go up 1-0 on the day.
The second set started close to begin, with both teams supporting a 5-5 tie after a strong performance by the Waves with Dykstra at the service line. The Toreros started to break away later in the set, amassing a 14-8 lead over the home team. The Waves battled back and with four consecutive services and two aces by Morgan, the Waves posted a two-point deficit 18-16. The comeback would be short-lived, however, as San Diego posted a 25-20 set two score to go up 2-0 on the day.
Pepperdine entered the third set, intent on fighting for a comeback and giving fans a thriller. The Waves did just that, first falling to a 10-8 deficit that lengthened to the 14-8 mark before the home team started battling back. With the Toreros up 24-21 late in the set, the Waves refused to give up, challenging the opposition to tie the score 24-24. The set was thrilling to the finish, with San Diego barely edging out the Waves with a 27-25 decision and a three-set sweep.
