SIMI VALLEY, Calif. " After posting the best second round of any team on Monday, the Pepperdine men's golf team came back on Tuesday and did the same thing in the third and final round of the Bill Cullum Invitational, and that was enough to lift the Waves to a second-place finish.
Unfortunately, the Waves put themselves into too big of a hole to start the event, as they were in 13th place after an opening-round 294 at the par-72 Wood Ranch Golf Club. But the Waves shot a 14-under 274 on Monday afternoon to get to fourth place, and followed that with a 9-under 279 on Tuesday to move up two more spots.
Pepperdine's total of 17-under (847) tied the ninth-best team score in program history, and that comes on the heels of last week's school-record 33-under at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational. The Waves tied for second place at that event.
The Waves were one of just two teams to shoot below-par during the third round, but unfortunately Loyola Marymount's 5-under was enough to hold off Pepperdine by five shots for the team title.
"We had two great rounds," Pepperdine Coach Michael Beard said. "Our goal coming here was to beat a lot of teams, and we did that. We've played in the final group for two straight tournaments, and I know we're going to win one soon."
Freshman Sahith Theegala (Chino Hills, Calif./Diamond Bar HS) posted a season-best tie for fourth place with a 5-under 211 (75-66-70). He had four birdies during his 2-under final round.
Senior Frederick Wedel (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) tied for the best round of the day by any player, a 5-under 67. That moved up him up to a tie for 12th place with a 3-under 213 (70-76-67). Wedel had six birdies on the day, including three in a row on holes 14-16.
Junior Robbie Geibel (Pembroke Pines, Fla./American Heritage HS/Louisville) also tied for 12th place with a 3-under 213 (75-68-70). His 2-under final round included four birdies.
Junior Cody McManus (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS) tied for 22nd place with an even-par 216 (76-68-72) and freshman Roy Cootes (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) tied for 36th at 219 (74-72-73).
Wedel and Cootes each had a team-high 14 birdies for the tournament (tied for fourth overall). Cootes led all players on the par-5 holes with a combined 9-under.
Playing as an individual, senior David Pelekoudas (Irvine, Calif./University HS/Orange Coast College) tied for 58th place at 225 (72-73-80).
The Waves will finish the fall season at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational on the island of Kauai from Nov. 2-4.
