LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The No. 9 Pepperdine men's water polo team closed the Kap7 SoCal Invitational with a pair of wins to finish ninth at the tournament on Sunday.

Pepperdine opened the day by beating No. 16 Santa Clara 13-5 and then downed No. 14 Air Force 16-6 in the final game of the day at LMU.

The Waves opened the day with a convincing win over Santa Clara, jumping out to a 5-1 lead in the first quarter and taking an 8-2 advantage into the half. Marko Madaras (Eger, Hungary//Golden West College) led the way in the first two quarters, scoring four goals in the opening half.

Pepperdine would outscore the Broncos in each quarter to cruise to the victory. Madaras led all scorers with four goals and Christopher Dilworth (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) was second with a pair of goals. Nine different players scored for the Waves in the game.

Splitting time in the net, Zack Rhodes (Palm Desert, Calif./Palm Desert HS) had six saves in three quarters of work and Philippe Marco (Atherton, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) had four saves in the fourth quarter.

It was more of the same in the late game as the Waves sealed a ninth place finish at the SoCal Tournament with a dominant win over Air Force.

The Waves were again in control at the half, 8-3, and then outscored the Falcons 7-1 in the third period to take a commanding 15-4 lead into the final quarter of play. Six different players scored in the third quarter for the Waves, including two goals from Wesley Sherburne (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar HS).

Sherburne and Madaras each had three goals in the late game, and five Waves scored multiple goals in the contest. It was the second highest scoring output of the season for the team. Rhodes put up 18 saves in the game as well, good for his second highest total of the year.

Pepperdine resumes MPSF play this coming week, heading to No. 2 USC on Saturday. That game will have a noon start time.
