MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's basketball team fell, 69-58, to the San Francisco Dons at home on Thursday night.

The Waves rallied to make it a three-point game in the second half, but a late run by the visitors put the game out of reach for Pepperdine.

After a back and forth first half, the Waves went into the break down by two thanks to a buzzer-beating three from Bria Richardson (Hawthorne, Calif./Serra HS). The Dons shot 45.5 percent from the field in the opening period en route to a 28-26 lead, getting 15 points from Paige Spietz in the process.

Pepperdine won the turnover battle early on, forcing USF into 13 giveaways to just seven for the Waves, but only turned those 13 turnovers into seven points. Pepperdine did grab eight offensive rebounds in the first half, leading to 10 second chance points.

An 11-4 run through the first four minutes of the second half gave USF a 39-30 lead early on. Ea Shoushtari (Los Angeles, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.) cut it to a five-point game with a three at the 7:43 mark, and then with 6:13 left Olivia Ogwumike (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods HS) got a steal and layup to make it 53-50. A 9-0 run by the Dons pushed it to a 12-point lead with less than two minutes to go, however, and the Waves were unable to make it close late.

USF finished the game shooting 46.6 percent from the floor and hit 27-of-37 free throws on the night. The Dons attempted 30 free throws in the second half alone to just 12 for the entire night by the Waves. Pepperdine shot 37.9 percent, but did score 16 points off of turnovers to just eight for USF. The Waves forced the Dons into 19 turnovers in the game and gave up the ball 13 times.

USF had four players score in double figures, led by a 24-point performance from Spietz. Richardson led the Waves with 15 points on the night.

The loss drops Pepperdine to 6-13 overall, 1-7 WCC and moves the Dons to 12-7, 3-5 WCC. The Waves will be back in action on Saturday when they take on Santa Clara at home. Tip-off will be at noon on Saturday, with the game being broadcast on WaveCasts.
