MALIBU, Calif. - Members of both the Pepperdine men's and women's tennis teams will be in action this weekend at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic on Jan. 16-18, marking the Waves' final tournament before the dual season begins later this month.
The National Collegiate Tennis Classic (NCTC), which began in 1976, will be held this year at the Sunrise Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif.
The men's draw will consist of players from USC, UCLA, Pepperdine, Washington, San Diego State, and Mississippi, while players from Stanford, USC, UCLA, Texas A&M, Arizona, Pepperdine and San Diego State will make up the women's draw.
Representing the Pepperdine men's team will be Guilherme Hadlich (Balneário Camboriú, Brazil/Colégio Energia), Pedro Iamachkine (Lima, Peru/Nebraska HS), Luca Marquard (Bensheim, Germany/Goethe Gymnasium Bensheim) and Lautaro Pane (Puerto Madryn, Argentina/SEADEA).
Hadlich redshirted with the Waves last season, and will be playing in his first official matches for Pepperdine. Iamachkine, Marquard and Pane will also be competing for the first time collegiately, as the freshmen all joined the squad in at the start of the spring semester.
Michaela Capannolo (Melbourne, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College), Danielle Feneridis (Auckland, New Zealand/Westlake Girls HS), Lorraine Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS), Laura Gulbe (Riga, Latvia/Murjāņu Sporta Ģimnāzija), Christine Maddox (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica HS) and Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai (Bangkok, Thailand/IMG Academy) will represent Pepperdine on the women's side.
Guillermo will likely be seeded high in the draw, as she enters her senior dual season with a career-high singles ranking of #17. She and sophomore Runglerdkriangkrai delivered impressive results last fall, going a combined 18-5 in singles, while teaming up in doubles for a 6-1 record.
Like the Pepperdine men entered into the tournament, Gulbe will be getting her first taste of collegiate tennis this weekend. The freshman was added to the roster earlier this month.
