PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - Michaela Capannolo and Lorraine Guillermo of the Pepperdine women's tennis team continued action at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships today in the doubles qualifying draw. The duo fell in the first round but will continue in the consolation bracket tomorrow.
Although Capannolo (Melbourne, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College) and Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) are not regular doubles partners, and were only playing in their second match together, the Wave tandem put up a solid fight versus a seeded pair.
Up against #32-ranked and seventh-seeded Gabriella De Santis and Sandy Niehaus of Ohio State, Capannolo and Guillermo pushed the Buckeyes all the way to a tiebreaker to decide set one. OSU made an early run in the first-to-seven tiebreaker, and won 7-1 to take the opening frame.
The Pepperdine pair continued to play well, despite their lack of experience playing with one another, but fell 6-3 in set two to make their exit out of the draw.
Capannolo and Guillermo will look to bounce back in Wednesday's doubles qualifying consolation bracket. Guillermo, ranked #20 in singles, keeps the week going on Thursday when she begins play in the singles main draw.
