MALIBU, Calif. - The #39 Pepperdine women's tennis team handed #60 UNLV a 6-1 loss on a sunny Valentine's Day afternoon in Malibu. The Waves swept the doubles point before winning five of the six singles matches in straight sets.

Pepperdine improves to 3-1 heading into tomorrow's contest vs. #25 Arizona State.

The Waves made short work of the doubles point, winning matches from the No. 2 and No. 3 spots in the lineup.

Matea Cutura (Zagreb, Croatia/Gimnazija Birotehnika/DePaul) and Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo), despite being nearly a foot apart in height, make for a complimentary doubles pair. The duo put away an 8-1 decision vs. Iren Kotseva and Paola Artiga to get Pepperdine off and running.

Yuki Chiang (Ojai, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) and Michaela Capannolo (Melbourne, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College) clinched the doubles point for the Waves, topping Anett Ferenczi-Bako and Kamelia Dimitrova 8-3.

With momentum on their side, the Waves won five matches in straight sets to put the dual away.

Capannolo shut out Ferenczi-Bako 6-0, 6-0. The sophomore has allowed just one total game in singles in her last two matches.

At No. 5, Chiang was equally as dominant and put away her match by a 6-1, 6-0 tally.

Granillo defeated Kotseva 6-3, 6-1, while Cutura won her third straight with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph against Santa Shumilina.

Pepperdine's ace Lorraine Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) was the final student-athlete off the court. The #23-ranked junior out did #36 Lucia Batta 6-1, 6-4.

The Waves entertain the Sun Devils on Saturday with a start time of 12 p.m. Free Pepperdine Waves headbands will be up for grabs.
