FLUSHING, N.Y. - Senior Lorraine Guillermo of the Pepperdine women's tennis team saw her run at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships come to an end today. The Waves' ace fell in a closely contested match to a top-five ranked opponent.
Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS), ranked #20 in the ITA singles rankings, opened the national indoor championships yesterday with a gritty 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 triumph over #78 Blair Shankle of Baylor.
The Wave then went up against #5-ranked and sixth seeded Julie Elbaba of Virginia today in the round of 16. The two players went game-for-game in the opening set, but a late break of serve gave the Cavalier all the separation she would need as she claimed the first by a score of 7-5.
Guillermo still kept pace with the two-time singles All-American, but again fell by a narrow 6-3 margin to exit the tournament.
Guillermo concludes the fall season with a team-best 10-2 record, including a 4-2 tally against ranked opponents.
Pepperdine resumes play in January with dual action opening on the 24th against Wichita State. The match will be contested at USC as part of the ITA Kick-off Weekend.
