MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's basketball team fell to Army, 56-44, on a cold shooting afternoon at home on Sunday.

The Waves tried to make a run late, getting a three and a jumper in the last minute from Ea Shoushtari, but it wasn't enough to overcome a season-low 32 percent shooting performance.

"Some shots just weren't falling for us and instead of getting back and doing what we were supposed to defensively, we committed some silly fouls and put them on the line," said head coach Ryan Weisenberg. "I thought offensively we played a little better in the second half, but defensively we didn't get it together."

The Waves trailed by 10 at the half, going into the break down 28-18. Both teams shot 31 percent in the first period, but Army hit 8-of-8 foul shots and the Waves didn't have a single free throw attempt to make up most of the difference. Pepperdine had the only two threes of the first half, courtesy of Shoushtari (Los Angeles, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.) and Allie Green (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento HS), but gave up 10 second chance points.

Pepperdine cut it to a six-point game early in the second half, making it a 30-24 contest at the 15:34 mark thanks to a couple of baskets by Green. Army would push it back to a double-digit lead, however, and heading into the final minute the Black Knights took their largest lead of the game, 51-36, to keep it out of reach despite five quick points from Shoushtari.

Army hit 16-of-22 free throws in the game to just 2-of-6 for the Waves. The visitors shot 34.5 percent from the field and hit just 2-of-14 3-pointers. Pepperdine was 4-for-11 from long range.

Bria Richardson (Hawthorne, Calif./Serra HS) led the Waves with 12 points in the game and Shoushtari had 11. Kelsey Minato put up a game-high 23 for Army, going 6-of-6 from the charity stripe.

The loss drops Pepperdine to 3-3 on the season and improves the Black Knights to 5-1 on the year. The Waves will be back at it on Wednesday when they host Long Beach State for a 7 p.m. contest.
