
Waves Fall to Stanford in MPSF Tournament Opener

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The No. 10 Pepperdine men's water polo team fell, 13-4, to No. 2 Stanford in its first round MPSF Tournament game on Friday.
The #7 seed Waves held the game close through the first half, but #2 seed Stanford was able to pull away with four straight goals in the third quarter.
Wesley Sherburne (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar HS) scored early in the third, pulling Pepperdine within three, 6-3. The Waves couldn't find another goal in the period, however, as the Cardinal took a 10-3 lead into the final period of play.
Stanford scored two straight to open the fourth and keep control of the match before Luke Hewko (Irvine, Calif./Servite HS) posted the Waves' fourth score with a goal.
Four different Pepperdine players scored in the game with Hewko and Sherburne each posting a team-high six shots. BJ Chumside led all players with three scores for Stanford.
Zack Rhodes (Palm Desert, Calif./Palm Desert HS) posted nine saves in the game before giving way to Philippe Marco (Atherton, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) on the fourth quarter.
The Waves continue play at the MPSF Tournament when they play #6 seed UC Irvine tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. That game will also be broadcast live on longbeachstate.com.
