Irvine, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's basketball team moved to 1-1 on the young season with a 76-53 victory over UC Irvine on the road on Wednesday, getting big nights out of Allie Green and Bria Richardson.
Pepperdine put three players in double figures in the game, with Green leading the way at 20 and Richardson adding 19.
"This was a really good team win on the road tonight," said head coach Ryan Weisenberg. "We came out a little slow and gave up too many rebounds in the first half, but were able to shore some of those things up in the second half."
The Waves grabbed a 12-point lead just before the half after a Richardson (Hawthorne, Calif./Serra HS) three and took a 36-27 advantage into the break. The Waves snagged several steals at midcourt and pushed them into fast-break baskets in the half, shooting 42.3 percent in the period.
UCI shot just 30 percent in the first half, but had 13 second-chance points on an 8-3 offensive rebounding advantage to keep it close. The Anteaters were just 1-for-11 from the 3-point line in the period.
Richardson and Keitra Wallace (Brea, Calif./Brea Olinda HS) would hit threes early in the second half to put the Waves back up double digits, 44-33.
Green (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento HS) would push her point total to 14 with a triple later in the second half and then Kelsey Brockway (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) followed with a steal and two free throws to make it a 20-point advantage, 62-42, at the 7:54 mark.
The Waves would maintain the comfortable margin to the end, going up by as much as 26 in the game.
"We got a little bit from everyone tonight," said Weisenberg. "Our leading scorer from last game never hit her stride, but was still able to put up nine boards and four assists. That's what kind of night it was. We have a lot to work on after this one, but overall it's a good win."
Ea Shoushtari (Los Angeles, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.) led all players with nine rebounds and Wallace had a team-high five assists to go along with her 13 points. Richardson finished with five steals in the game. Green went 9-of-16 from the field to lead the team in scoring and Richardson was 5-of-10 from the floor.
Jenny Dee had 11 points for the Anteaters as they fall to 1-2 on the year.
The Waves will be back in action on Friday when they take on No. 18 Iowa to open the Hawkeye Challenge. Audio of that game will be broadcast live on WaveCasts.
