MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine men's basketball team overcame a cold shooting night to improve to 2-0 on the season with a 76-61 victory over Cal Lutheran on Monday night.
Junior forward Stacy Davis (Laveen, Ariz./Fairfax HS) scored a team-high 18 points and added eight rebounds. Sophomore guard/forward Lamond Murray Jr. (Los Angeles, Calif./Bishop Montgomery HS) tied his career high with 16 points. Junior forward Jett Raines (Coppell, Texas/Coppell HS) recorded his first career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
The Waves shot just 37.1% from the field, but on the plus side, they held the Kingsmen to 35.5% shooting. Pepperdine also got a boost at the foul line, where the Waves went 27-for-37 for the contest.
Murray sparked the Waves in the first half. The Waves led 17-15 when Murray scored 12 of Pepperdine's next 13 points and helped extend the Waves' lead to 30-20. Pepperdine went into the break with a 36-26 lead.
But missed shots by the Waves to start the second half allowed the Kingsmen to chip away at the lead. They got it down to three points at 49-46 with 10:34 to play, but Pepperdine responded with a 6-0 run after two free throws by freshman guard Shawn Olden (Tulsa, Okla./Union HS) and jumpers by Murray and Raines. That made it 55-46 with under nine minutes to play.
CLU would get no closer than seven the rest of the way, and the Waves would finish strong in the closing minutes to push the lead to as many as 18 points.
Pepperdine also enjoyed advantages of 50-36 on the boards, and 14-4 with second-chance points.
Sophomore guard Amadi Udenyi (Oakland, Calif./De La Salle HS/St. Thomas More Prep) contributed a career-high eight assists, while sophomore guard Jeremy Major (Pasadena, Calif./Maranatha HS) had six.
Due to differences between Division I and III rules, Pepperdine counted this as an official game, while Cal Lutheran considered it an exhibition. CLU got a game-high 22 points from senior forward Coltrane Powdrill.
The Waves play their first road game on Wednesday (Nov. 19) when they visit San Jose State at 7 p.m. Fans can listen to the game online via WaveCasts at PepperdineSports.com.
