LINCOLN, Neb. - The Pepperdine women's basketball team fell on the road in its regular-season opener on Saturday, losing 100-65 to No. 16-ranked Nebraska.
The loss comes despite a hot shooting night from guard Ea Shoushtari (Los Angeles, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.) who poured in 19 points.
The Waves tried to keep up with the high-scoring Nebraska offense in the first half, scoring 43 points in the period, but it wasn't quite enough as the Cornhuskers were able to score 56 and take a 13-point lead into the break.
Pepperdine 51.4 percent in the half, hitting 18-of-35 field goals and 6-of-8 threes. Nebraska was able to score at a 68.8 percent clip however, missing just 10 shots while hitting 22.
Both offenses slowed down in the second half, but the Waves couldn't close the gap down the stretch. Pepperdine went cold from beyond the arc in the second half, missing all eight of its attempts in the period. The Waves were also unable to get to the free throw line, shooting just four foul shots in the game.
Shoushtari finished the day shooting 8-for-11 from the floor and hitting 2-of-5 3-pointers to post her 19 points. Allie Green (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento HS) also made it into double figures, scoring 12 points and Keitra Wallace (Brea, Calif./Brea Olinda HS) added 11. Green led the team with six rebounds. Usually high-scoring Bria Richardson (Hawthorne, Calif./Serra HS) was held to just seven points in the game, but did lead the Waves with five assists.
Brandi Jeffery led the Huskers with 19 points and Emily Cady posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards.
Pepperdine starts the year 0-1 with the loss and Nebraska opens 1-0. The Waves will be back in action next week when they head to UC Irvine on Wednesday.
