MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine men's basketball team got off to a fast start and all five starters scored in double-figures as the Waves earned a season-opening 89-74 victory over Fresno State on Friday night.

Junior forward Stacy Davis (Laveen, Ariz./Fairfax HS), a returning All-West Coast Conference first teamer, had 22 points, nine rebounds and four assists to lead the Waves (1-0). Sophomore guard Jeremy Major (Pasadena, Calif./Maranatha HS) scored a career-high 21 points along with seven rebounds.

Pepperdine made 15 of its first 19 shots, including 11 straight makes at one point, to go ahead 34-20 with 7:50 left in the first half. Later, the Waves extended their lead to 15 points at 38-23 with 4:11 to go after a jumper by Major.

Fresno State closed the gap to 41-35 at halftime, but the Waves led by double-figures for nearly the entire second half and took their biggest lead of 17 points at 68-51 with 9:30 to play. Pepperdine went 23-for-27 from the foul line in the second half (26-for-32 for the game).

The Waves shot 56.9% from the field for the contest and were better than 50% in each half. Pepperdine had a 35-28 rebounding edge and a 22-13 advantage in points off turnovers.

Sophomore guard Amadi Udenyi (Oakland, Calif./De La Salle HS/St. Thomas More Prep) and freshman guard Shawn Olden (Tulsa, Okla./Union HS) each scored 13 points, while junior forward Jett Raines (Coppell, Texas/Coppell HS) contributed 10 points and eight rebounds. Junior guard/forward Atif Russell (Katy, Texas/Seven Lakes HS) chipped in with eight points off the bench.

"I liked seeing five guys in double-figures, and it was almost six," Pepperdine Coach Marty Wilson said. "These guys like each other. They feel good about sharing the ball. We talk about creating for each other, and they did a very good job in the second half. We turned good shots into great shots, and it was fun to watch."

Fresno State (0-1), which shot 47.5% from the field, got a game-high 25 points from Marvelle Harris.

Pepperdine was victorious in its season opener for the third time in four years.

The Waves are back at home on Monday (Nov. 17) when they face Cal Lutheran at 7 p.m. Fans can watch the game online via WaveCasts at PepperdineSports.com.
