LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The No. 12 Pepperdine men's water polo team fell, 15-7, to the top-ranked UCLA Bruins on Friday night in a conference road game.
The Waves tried to make a run in the third, scoring a pair of early goals out of the half, but couldn't come all the way back, falling to 4-5 on the year and 0-2 in MPSF play.
Jake Schrimpf (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) scored on a counterattack out of the break to pull the Waves to within six at 9-3. Luke Hewko (Irvine, Calif./Servite HS) then fired home another goal at the 3:44 mark of the third period to make it a 9-5 game. The Bruins would finish the quarter on a 3-0 run, however, to keep control of the match.
The two teams played even at 3-3 in the fourth quarter.
UCLA jumped out front early, going up 8-0 before the Waves found their first goal in the second quarter.
Kenneth Keller (Long Beach, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) scored the first of his two goals on the night in the second, making it 8-1 at the 1:58 mark. Wesley Sherburne (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar HS) then scored a second goal for the Waves just before the break to make it a six-goal game.
Zack Rhodes (Palm Desert, Calif./Palm Desert HS) finished with eight saves for the Waves and Garrett Danner had 12 for UCLA. Danny McClintick led the Bruins with three goals in the game and Keller and Sherburne had a game-high two for visiting waves.
