SAN DIEGO - After Lorraine Guillermo of the Pepperdine women's tennis team marched to the finals of both the singles and doubles draws at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championships, some bad luck stuck on championship day. Guillermo was slowed down by illness, and finished as the runner-up champion.
Despite playing at less than 100-percent, Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) and Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai (Bangkok, Thailand/IMG Academy) delivered a strong showing in the doubles final vs. Giuliana Olmos and Gabby Smith of USC.
The opposing duos battled all the way to the tiebreaker in both sets, but the Trojans would make the late charge to take the victory. USC won the first-to-seven tiebreaker 7-5 in the first and 7-1 in the second.
Unfortunately for Guillermo, that would be the end of her day, making top-seeded Zoe Scandalis the regional singles champion.
Guillermo went a perfect 5-0, not dropping a set en route to the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional title match. She has nine wins overall this fall.
Today's loss in the doubles final was Guillermo and Runglerdkriangkrai's first of the season. The pair still boasts an all-time record together of 17-5.
The Waves will now hope for a wildcard entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship next month.
