SAN DIEGO - Senior Lorraine Guillermo of the Pepperdine women's tennis team is making the most of her final run at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championships, and has advanced to the singles title match for the first time. The star of the regionals will be competing for the doubles crown as well alongside sophomore Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai.
Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS), who reached the semifinals of the regional championships as a sophomore and junior, broke through for her first finals appearance after a dominant win today. The #20-ranked and second-seeded ace defeated #38 Giuliana Olmos (USC), 6-3, 6-2.
The senior has yet to lose a set through five matches at the USTA/ITA Regional, and enters tomorrow's match against #15 Zoe Scandalis with a 9-1 fall record. The two top seeds will square off at 11:30 a.m.
Not only will Guillermo represent the Waves in the singles final, but she reached the doubles final as well with partner Runglerdkriangkrai (Bangkok, Thailand/IMG Academy). After going 11-4 together in 2013-14, the pair is off to a 6-0 start this fall.
The Pepperdine duo, seeded fifth in the draw, ended Alexandra Osbourne and Leighann Sahagun's Cinderella run, 6-2, 7-6 (5). The Arizona State tandem was unseeded at the tournament.
The Waves will face Olmos and Gabby Smith tomorrow at 9 a.m.
