LA MIRADA, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's swimming and diving team opened the 2014-15 campaign today at the PCSC Relays. The Waves scored 99 points to place fourth, and were just eight points shy of a second-place result.
The teams competing proved to be very evenly matched. Pepperdine edged Concordia Irvine by a single point, and finished just five points behind crosstown rival Loyola Marymount. Fresno Pacific finished runner-up with 107 points, while Azusa Pacific won the meet with 165 points. Meet host Biola scored 42 points for sixth.
The Waves boasted five top-five finishes in the relay events. Divers Sydney Newman (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge HS) and Lauren Stigers (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay HS) placed sixth or higher in both the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions to add 57 points to the team's tally.
Newman opened her sophomore season on the 3-meter, and score 166.45 points to take fourth. She upped her score to a 178.75 in the 1-meter to place third. Stigers, a freshman swimmer-diver combination competitor, placed sixth in both diving events.
In the first swimming event of the day, the 300 butterfly relay, Nicolette Barreiro (Valencia, Calif./Hart HS), Codie Cox (Sonoma, Calif./Maria Carrillo HS/Santa Rosa JC) and Jessica Mosbaugh (Los Alamitos, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) teamed up for a collaborative time of 3:01.71. The trio was just over five seconds behind the leaders.
The day's best finishes came in 300 breaststroke and 400 IM relays, where the Waves took second in both.
Freshmen Sabrina Altman (Kula, Hawaii/Seabury Hall) and Stigers joined defending PCSC 200-breaststroke champion Mosbaugh in the 300 breaststroke relay. Although LMU edged the Waves by a second for the victory, Pepperdine produced a solid time of 3:28.13.
The trio added Allison Naasz (Lodi, Calif./Tokay HS) to the mix in the 400 IM relay and clocked a 4:12.37 to place second.
Pepperdine's fourth top-three finish in the relays came in the 400 medley. Within two seconds of the leaders, Altman, Mosbaugh, Barreiro and Naasz took third behind a time of 4:00.79.
Rachel Wilt (Wenatchee, Wash./Wenatchee HS), Altman, Barreiro and Naasz continued to produce quality split times and placed fifth in the 200 freestyle relay.
The Waves return to action next weekend, Oct. 17-18, for the annual Malibu Invitational. Distance and diving take center stage on Friday, while the middle distance and sprint events will be contested on Saturday.
