MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball Blue and Orange World Series opens this week as the squads will play a three-game set to decide the annual classic. Play starts Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Eddy D. Field Stadium and then continues Sunday at 1 p.m. before concluding Monday at 2:30 p.m.
"This is a great chance to see our guys manage their own game," said head coach Steve Rodriguez, who enters his 11th season at the helm for the Waves. "They pick their own teams and make their own calls, so the outcome is all on them. It's a great way to see how they handle adversity without the coaches and a good way to get some more competition in before we head to Taiwan."
The series was cut from five games to three this year with the Waves' participation in the Formosa Cup in Taiwan approaching at the end of the month.
The teams were selected by captains Corey Miller (Laguna Niguel, Calif./JSerra Catholic HS) and Matt Maurer (Medford, Ore./North Medford HS). Miller will head the Orange Lions and be assisted by Ben Rodriguez (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain HS), while Maurer takes the reigns for the Blue Moose with the assistance of Aaron Barnett (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley HS).
Jackson McClelland (Beaumont, Calif./Redlands East Valley HS) takes the hill for the Orange in game one, facing off against Eric Karch (Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS). Miller will throw for the Orange on Sunday and Aaron Brown (Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) will go on Monday. Maurer has yet to set the Sunday and Monday starters for the Blue.
Admission to all games of the series will be free and will give fans a chance to get their first look at top 2012 recruits A.J. Puckett (Danville, Calif./De La Salle HS), Nick Costello (Claremont, Calif./Claremont HS), Manny Jefferson (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS) and Jack Ross (Gilroy, Calif./Palma HS).
Pepperdine opens the 2014 season with a three-game series against St. John's February 14.
