RIVIERA/ITA ALL-AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - After posting three wins in two days, Lorraine Guillermo of the Pepperdine women's tennis team earned one of eight spots left in Riviera/ITA All-American Championship singles main draw.
Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS), seeded seventh in the qualifying draw, opened the tournament with a straight-set victory over Stanford's Carol Zhao.
She then followed that up with a marathon 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-1 triumph over Lily Kimbell of Georgia. Kimbell was a prequalifyer, winning three matches over the weekend.
In the third and final round, the junior faced #42-ranked Yang Pang of Arkansas. Despite facing her first ranked opponent of the tournament, Guillermo handily won 6-4, 6-2.
In tomorrow's main draw, Guillermo will face #5-ranked and fourth seeded Anett Schutting. Schutting held down the No. 1 spot in Cal's lineup last spring.
Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo) rebounded from her loss in the first round of qualifying with a pair of wins against ranked foes in consolation. First the senior disposed of Rice's Dominique Harmath, ranked #49, in three sets. #68-ranked Guillermo then topped #44 Lynn Chi 6-3, 6-4.
Guillermo and Granillo also battled in doubles qualifying but fell in the second round.
Guillermo's match is scheduled for 11:45 a.m. on the courts of the Riviera Country Club.
