MALIBU, Calif. - After winning the most closely contested doubles point of the season, the #30 Pepperdine women's tennis team rode the momentum in singles to a 5-2 victory over #21 Arizona State.
"Everyone was seeing the ball well today," said head coach Gualberto Escudero. "And when you see the ball well you move well and make better shots. It was a good win for the girls today."
The Sun Devils (6-2) took a slight advantage in doubles after Sianna Simmons and Leighann Sahagun edged Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo) and Megan Moore (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) 9-7 on court three.
Khunpak Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/Bangkok Patana School) and Lorraine Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) fought off match point to tie the score at eight all. Meanwhile, on court two, Ali Walters (Newport Beach, Calif./Creekside Christian HS) and Arianna Colffer (Corona, Calif./Buena Vista) were also heading into a tiebreaker versus Michelle Brycki and Joanna Smith.
Issara and Guillermo dominated in the tiebreaker, going on a 6-0 run against Jacqueline Cako and Hannah James before winning 7-1. Colffer and Walters went point-for-point with Brycki and Smith before going on a 5-1 run to win 7-4 in the breaker and secure the doubles point for the Waves (5-3).
Although Granillo suffered a loss to #7-ranked Cako in the top singles match, Guillermo gave Pepperdine a 2-0 lead after downing James 6-4, 6-0.
Arizona State answered with a win from court five but it would be the last point the visiting team would score, as the Waves won the remaining three singles matches.
Moore rebounded from a 6-1 loss to Sahagun in the first set to win 6-3, 6-2 to put Pepperdine ahead 3-2.
Colffer had split sets with Simmons and was tied 4-4 in the third before claiming the final two games to clinch the dual for the Waves.
Issara was deadlocked with Brycki 3-3 in the third set when the players went to a 10-point tiebreaker to determine the winner. Issara once again shined in the pressure situation, winning 10-5 to earn her first win over a ranked opponent this season.
The Waves return to action next week, when they travel to Berkeley to face #5 California on Saturday, March 3. The next home match is scheduled for Wednesday, March 7 against #22 Florida State.
