No. 6 Pepperdine Falls at No. 2 UCLA 12-7

WESTWOOD, CALIF. - No. 6 Pepperdine battled but could not slow a run by No. 2 UCLA early in the second half and dropped a 12-7 MPSF decision Thursday night at the Spieker Aquatics Center. The Waves (10-7, 2-2 MPSF) tied the contest in the second period, but could not seize a lead against the Bruins (20-2, 3-0 MPSF).
Pepperdine went scoreless in the first quarter and trailed 3-0 before bouncing back to tie the contest at 3-3 midway through the second quarter. UCLA seized control from there and ripped off five unanswered goals to take an 8-4 lead into the fourth quarter. The Bruins built their lead to 11-4 before Pepperdine closed the match on a modest 3-1 run.
Stephen Loomis (Moraga, Calif./Campolindo HS), James Perry (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte HS) and Ray McIntyre (Calabasas, Calif./Notre Dame HS) each recorded a pair of goals for the Waves. Loomis scored twice in the second, while Perry tallied both goals in the third frame. Nick Cooper (Clayton, Calif./De La Salle HS) scored in the second period.
Josh Samuels scored a match-high three goals to lead four Bruins with multi-goal nights.
Goalkeeper Bence Valics (Eger, Hungary) collected 13 saves, including eight in the first half.
Pepperdine wraps up its four-match road swing when it travels to Santa Barbara for a showdown at No. 3 UC Santa Barbara in MPSF action Saturday, October 27. Match time against the Gauchos is set for a noon start.
