MIDLAND, Texas - Ale Granillo of the Pepperdine women's tennis team won the singles title at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational on Sunday afternoon. The sophomore went a perfect 5-0 to win the first tournament of her collegiate career.

Although Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidlago) is in her second season with the Waves, she only competed during the dual campaign as a freshman. She played mostly from the No. 2 and No. 3 spots in the lineup and concluded the year with seven wins.

Granillo opened the tournament in Midland on Friday with a win over Caroline Starck of Texas Tech during the second round, after being granted a first round bye. On Saturday she downed Nebraska's Patricia Veresova, 6-4, 6-2, before upsetting #122-ranked and fourth-seeded Anastasia Erofeeva of Tulsa in the quarterfinals.

The semifinal match up pitted Granillo against Stefanie Tan of Texas Christian. After splitting the first two sets, Granillo surged through set three to win 6-3, and advance to the finals.

Tan's teammate, Simona Parajova, awaited her there, but Granillo controlled the pace of the match and won 6-2, 6-1.

In doubles, Khunpak Issara (Bangkok, Thailand/World Study Center) and Lorraine Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) advanced to the semifinals of the 21-team bracket but narrowly lost a 9-7 decision to Kenna Kilgo and Samantha Adams of Texas Tech. Kilgo and Adams would go on to win the tournament.

Pepperdine's next tournament on the schedule is the ITA/Riviera All-American Championships held Oct. 1-9 in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
