MALIBU, Calif. - Jason Terry's one-out RBI single off reliever Corey Miller in the 10th inning held up as the game-winning hit in Santa Clara's 3-2 victory over Pepperdine Friday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.

The win lifted Santa Clara's season record to 16-26 and 3-10 vs. the West Coast Conference, while Pepperdine dropped to 18-23 and 4-6.

Bronco closer J.R. Graham (3-3) earned the win behind two scoreless innings of work with two strikeouts.

Santa Clara jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead before being blanked by starter Aaron Gates (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) and Miller (Laguna Niguel, Calif./JSerra Catholic HS) over the next eight innings, during which the Waves came back to momentarily tie the game at 2-2.

Redshirt junior third baseman Miles Silverstein (Bell Canyon, Calif./Calabasas HS) cut the Waves' deficit in half with a solo home run in the third against SCU starter Cory Hall, and then in the eighth, Trent Diedrich (Fresno, Calif./Bullard HS) brought home pinch runner Tyler Brubaker (Valencia, Calif./Saugus HS) on a flare to shallow center field.

The Broncos sent eight men to the plate in their half of the first. Gates put the first two batters he faced on base via walk and hit by pitch, Kyle DeMerritt advanced them with a fly out to deep right, and then Terry drove in his first run with a ground ball to second.

A second walk in the frame kept the inning alive for Matt Ozanne who followed through with a sharp infield single to third base that made it a 2-0 game.

Gates allowed two hits through 8.0 innings, but walked six and hit three batters in finishing his outing with 118 pitches.

After striking out the side in the ninth, Miller (0-1) quickly found himself in trouble in the 10th when Lucas Herbst reached on an error by second baseman Joe Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory). DeMerritt sacrificed Herbst to second, allowing him to score easily on Terry's hit to right-center field.

The run was unearned to Miller. He finished the game with four Ks.

Sever led the Pepperdine offense with two hits, the first of which - a second-inning single through the left side - served as the 100th of his collegiate career. Silverstein should collect his 100th this weekend as well since he is just one shy from hitting that plateau.

Pepperdine returns to action Saturday at 1 p.m. for game two of its three-game series vs. Santa Clara.
