Pepperdine and Saint Mary's Box Score (May 28, 2011)
MALIBU, Calif. - In a distressing turn of events Saturday at Eddy D. Field Stadium, a joyous pregame ceremony recognizing the Pepperdine baseball team's graduating seniors was swiftly ruined by the visiting Saint Mary's Gaels who erupted for seven first-inning runs en route to a 14-7 victory in the season finale for both schools.
Pepperdine finished 2011 with an overall season record of 22-34 and 7-14 mark against the West Coast Conference, while Saint Mary's finished a game under .500 at 27-28 and was 9-12 in conference play. The final conference standings will be posted at WCCSports.com following Sunday's three games.
Seniors Jordan Durrance (Manteca, Calif./Sierra HS) and Keven Inman (Bakersfield, Calif./Garces HS) both worked the first inning despite not pitching much this season due to various injuries. Durrance (0-1), in making his first start since 2008, was chased from the game without retiring a batter and gave up five runs (four earned) on three hits and a walk.
Inman faced seven more batters, surrendering two additional runs before finally escaping the inning with a ground ball to second.
After a scoreless second, the Gaels got their offense rolling once again in the third, sending 10 men to the plate against Pepperdine regulars Alex Najera (Anaheim Hills, Calif./Canyon HS) and Jared Lee (Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) in taking an insurmountable 13-0 lead. Najera was charged with four of those runs while Lee gave up three in as many innings of work.
Relievers Michael Swanner (Cardiff, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS), Brian McIlhenny (Scottsdale, Ariz./Brophy College Preparatory) and Torrey Jacoby (Camarillo, Calif./Notre Dame (Ariz.) Preparatory) eventually brought some stability to the game starting in the sixth and shut the Gaels out over the last four frames.
Incredibly, Jacoby, who had never pitched for the Waves prior to today, struck out the Gaels leading hitter Patrick Wisdom (.351) on three pitches to start the ninth. Then after putting two aboard, he got a pop up and fly out off the bats of Riley Heinzer and Justin Fazio.
Jacoby also provided a little spark at the plate as Pepperdine's starting first baseman, going 2-for-4 with a run and RBI. Senior Miles Silverstein (Bell Canyon, Calif./Calabasas HS) and junior Ryan Van Amburg (Campbell, Calif./St. Francis HS) also ripped two hits with Van Amburg adding two runs.
Pepperdine slightly reduced its sizable deficit with five runs scored between the third and fourth innings. Joe Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) drove in the first run on an RBI double and scored during the fourth after reaching base on a strikeout/wild pitch by Saint Mary's starter Martin Agosta (7-6).
The Waves would score twice more in the ninth vs. Gaels reliever Ben Griset. Nate Johnson (Camarillo, Calif./Camarillo HS) came home on an RBI ground ball to second, and Jacoby knocked in Van Amburg from third on a single through the left side.
Up next for the Waves is a week-long trip to Italy, where they'll visit the cities of Rome, Maremma, Pisa, Florence and Assisi in addition to playing a pair of games vs. local teams Orioles Grosseto (May 31) and Nettuno Baseball Club (June 4).
