Pepperdine and Saint Mary's Box Score (May 27, 2011)
MALIBU, Calif. - A four-run second inning propelled Saint Mary's to its first win over Pepperdine since 2008, a 6-3 triumph Friday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium. Miles Silverstein led all players with three hits and Joe Sever slammed his sixth home run of the year in the ninth.
The bigger issue however for the Waves (22-33, 7-13 WCC) today was the hits they didn't get. Pepperdine finished the game 1-for-16 with runners on base, stranding 10 against starter Kyle Barraclough (6-5) and two relievers. Six Waves were left in scoring position and half of those were standing at third base when the inning ended.
Barraclough pushed his way through 7.0 innings, in which he walked three and struck out eight on 120 pitches.
Pepperdine's two runs against Barraclough came in the third inning and cut Saint Mary's (26-28, 8-12 WCC) lead to 4-2. Nate Johnson (Camarillo, Calif./Camarillo HS) drove in the first run on a bases-loaded ground ball and a wild pitch brought home Silverstein (Bell Canyon, Calif./Calabasas HS).
The Waves kept threatening to narrow their deficit but Silverstein was left hanging at third base with one out in the fifth, and Harrison Kain (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) was ditched at second base the following inning.
Pepperdine's luck didn't change against reliever Jordan Mills in the eighth as they left the bases loaded down by four at 6-2. Sever's round-tripper came with one out in the ninth off Gaels closer Patrick Keane, clearing the fence in left-center field.
Five of Sever's six home runs have come against West Coast Conference opponents.
Saint Mary's big second inning also started with a solo home run, this one hit by Donald Collins - his first of the year - against Jon Moscot (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Palisades Charter HS). From there the Gaels ripped four more singles, mixing in a sacrifice hit, to score three more runs.
Moscot responded with five consecutive scoreless innings, in which only two runners reached base against him, but things again fell apart during the Gaels two-run eighth that sealed their victory.
After receiving a leadoff single by Cole Norton, Saint Mary's loaded the bases with back-to-back bunt singles from their No. 2 and 3 hitters Justin Fazio and Patrick Wisdom. Fazio's sacrifice attempt dropped right in between Moscot and his right-side infielders, and Wisdom's rolled right up the third-base chalk.
Norton slid safely under the tag of catcher Trent Diedrich (Fresno, Calif./Bullard HS) for run No. 5 after tagging up on a fly ball to right by Troy Channing. Two batters later Brenden Kalfus smoked a line drive to left that was caught on the run by Brian Humphries (El Cajon, Calif./Granite Hills HS), but it sailed far enough to plate Fazio.
Moscot finished the game on 104 pitches with four strikeouts and no walks.
Pepperdine and Saint Mary's finish up their series and seasons Saturday at 1 p.m. Seniors from both teams will be recognized during a pregame ceremony.
