SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - San Francisco scored five times in the seventh off the Waves bullpen, breaking a 2-2 tie en route to a 7-2 victory Saturday at Benedetti Diamond. Sophomore Joe Sever homered in the first inning - his team-best fourth of the year - as part of a 3-for-4 day at the plate.
Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory) also singled twice and has registered six multi-hit games over Pepperdine's last nine contests. Aside from Sever, however, the Waves only produced three additional hits off starter Matt Hiserman (6-3) and reliever Elliott Waterman, including Tony Cooper's (San Carlos, Calif./Junipero Serra HS) RBI double in the fifth that gave Pepperdine (20-26, 5-9 WCC) its second and final lead of the game at 2-1.
The Dons (27-22, 13-4 WCC) knotted the game at 2-2 in their home half of the sixth with Stephen Yarrow scoring on Nik Balog's second RBI against starter Jon Moscot (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Palisades Charter HS). The sophomore transfer struck out four and left the game to the bullpen after tossing 111 pitches through 6.0 frames.
In the seventh, the first five Dons reached base against relievers Ricky Villarreal (Edinburg, Texas/Edinburg HS) and Brian McIlhenny (Scottsdale, Ariz./Brophy College Preparatory) and scored their first two runs of the decisive frame on a bases-loaded hit by pitch and walk.
McIlhenny got a double play ground ball to give the Waves a brief respite, but the Dons responded once again with three straight singles that pushed their lead to 7-2.
The Waves will look to win the final game of their three-game series by the bay Sunday at 1 p.m.
