SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Pete Lavin spoiled Aaron Gates' shutout bid with a three-run seventh-inning home run that sent San Francisco to a 3-2 win over Pepperdine Friday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond.

The loss snapped Gates' (3-4) personal three-game winning streak and dropped the Waves overall record to 20-25 and 5-8 vs. the West Coast Conference. USF improved to 26-22 and kept a half-game lead over Gonzaga in the WCC standings at 12-4.

Gates (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) allowed just three hits entering the seventh, but with two outs surrendered a single to Artiz Garcia and then plunked pinch hitter Matt Chavez with a pitch that kept the inning alive for the Dons leadoff batter.

Lavin started his game-winning at-bat in a 0-2 hole before swatting a 2-2 pitch over the wall in right-center field for his second round-tripper of the season. Gates stayed in the game to face one more batter before being replaced by relievers Brian McIlhenny (Scottsdale, Ariz./Brophy College Preparatory) and Corey Miller (Laguna Niguel, Calif./JSerra HS), who combined to retired the final four batters on a total of seven pitches.

Pepperdine went on to put two aboard with one out in the ninth but closer Jordan Remer quelled that threat with consecutive strikeouts of David DiPaola (San Carlos, Calif./Junipero Serra HS) and Eric Karch (Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS).

Kyle Zimmer (4-4) started and earned the win, scattering six hits over 7.0 innings with eight strikeouts. Three of those hits came in the first inning, including Brian Humphries' (El Cajon, Calif./Granite Hills HS) two-run home run and a double by Sam Meyer (Los Gatos, Calif./St. Francis HS).

Humphries, Meyer and DiPaola all finished with two hits. Meyer's hitting streak now stands at seven games, five of which have been multi-hit efforts.

Pepperdine will look to even its series vs. USF Saturday at 1 p.m.
