HOLLISTER, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's golf team overwhelmed the rest of the West Coast Conference for its 10th consecutive league title, as the Waves captured the WCC Championships with a 36-stroke margin of victory on Tuesday. Additionally, freshman Grace Na gave Pepperdine its 10th straight medalist at the event.
The Waves have won 13 of the 15 championships ever contested, and their average margin of victory over the past 10 years has been 27.5 strokes. The 36-stroke win ties the fourth-largest margin of victory by the Waves at the WCC Championships.
Pepperdine shot a final-round 293 at the par-72 San Juan Oaks Golf Club, giving the Waves a total of 880 (296-291-293), their best score since 2004 at the event. Gonzaga finished in second place with a total of 916. Pepperdine led by 11 strokes after the first round and 26 after the second.
Na (Alameda, Calif./Alameda HS) entered Tuesday's final round with a one-stroke lead over teammate Danielle Kang (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake HS) and ended it with a one-stroke victory after both shot 75s. Na finished with a 1-over 217 (74-68-75) to Kang's 2-over 218 (73-70-75).
Na pulled off a tremendous double during this academic year. In the fall while competing for Alameda High School, she won the 2010 CIF State Championship as an individual. She then graduated early from high school in order to enroll at Pepperdine in January. This was her first collegiate victory and she's finished in the top 20 at five of her six college events thus far.
Kang finished second at the WCC Championships for the second straight year, while junior Kaitlin Drolson (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) gave the Waves a 1-2-3 finish as she moved up to third place thanks to a final-round 2-under 70, the best score of the day by any player in the field.
Drolson recorded a 4-over 220 (74-76-70) and has finished in the top five in each of her three trips to the WCC Championships. Her final round included four birdies and the only blemish was one double-bogey.
Kang had four birdies during her final round and she and Na tied for the tournament lead with 10 birdies apiece. Drolson had a total of nine.
All five Waves finished in the top 10, as senior Taylore Karle (Scottsdale, Ariz./Laurel Springs Academy) took sixth place at 226 (75-77-74) and freshman Liv Cheng (Auckland, New Zealand) tied for eighth place at 228 (75-79-74).
The NCAA announces pairings for the NCAA Regionals next Monday (April 25). The Waves could be sent to play in Daytona Beach, Fla. (LPGA International), South Bend, Ind. (Warren Golf Course) or Seattle, Wash. (Washington National Golf Club) on May 5-7. The NCAA Championships will be held on May 18-21 in College Station, Texas (Traditions Golf Club).
