HOLLISTER, Calif. - In search of its 10th consecutive West Coast Conference title, the Pepperdine women's golf team has opened a massive 26-shot lead after Monday's first two rounds at the WCC Championships. Additionally, the individual title will likely be decided between the Waves' Grace Na and Danielle Kang.

The Waves shot 296 during the morning round for an 11-stroke lead, then widened their margin after a 291 in the afternoon. Pepperdine stands at 587, well ahead of Gonzaga's 613. The third and final round will be contested on Tuesday at the par-72 San Juan Oaks Golf Club.

Na (Alameda, Calif./Alameda HS), a freshman, and Kang (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake HS), a sophomore, have broken far ahead of the rest of the field. Na leads with a 2-under 142 and Kang is right behind with a 1-under 143. In third place is San Francisco's Tinna Johannsdottir with a 5-over 149.

Na could pull off quite the double during this academic year. She won the CIF State championship playing for Alameda High last fall, then completed high school early in order to enroll at Pepperdine in January. Na had a 2-over 74 during the morning but came back with the best score of the day, a 4-under 68 in the afternoon. During the second round, she had an eagle on the par-4 third hole and had five other birdies (and a total of eight for the day).

Kang has had quite a year as well, highlighted by her win at the U.S. Women's Amateur last summer. She followed up a 1-over 73 with a 2-under 70 on Monday. She had two birdies in the morning and four in the afternoon.

All five of the Waves rank among the top 10 in the individual race. Junior Kaitlin Drolson (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) is in fourth place at 150 (74-76), senior Taylore Karle (Scottsdale, Ariz./Laurel Springs Academy) is in eighth place at 152 (75-77) and freshman Liv Cheng (Auckland, New Zealand) is tied for 10th place at 154 (75-79). Drolson posted five birdies on the day.

Pepperdine has won 12 of the 14 WCC Championships ever contested. The Waves have also won individual titles 12 times, including nine consecutive.
