SAN DIEGO, Calif. - A two-out bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth inning gave San Diego a 4-3 win over Pepperdine Saturday afternoon at Cunningham Stadium. The Waves led 3-0 after the first, but the Toreros came back with two in the sixth plus two more in the ninth.

The loss dropped Pepperdine's season record to 15-18 and 1-4 vs. the West Coast Conference, while San Diego improved to 10-22 (2-3 WCC).

Closer Ricky Villarreal (Edinburg, Texas/Edinburg HS) suffered the defeat. After getting the last out of the eighth, he started the ninth by giving up a leadoff single followed by a game-tying RBI triple off the bat of Dillon Checkal.

Villarreal intentionally walked the next two batters to load the bases before striking out Bryan Haar for a big second out, but couldn't do the same against Kris Bryant who was credited with the game-winning RBI.

Aaron Gates (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) started for the Waves and gave them 7.0 strong innings, in which he struck out four batters. He blanked the Toreros through the first five frames before experiencing some control issues in the sixth.

The Torero's first two batters both recorded base hits that inning and Gates helped bring them home on consecutive wild pitches. A follow-up failed pick off to second brought another USD base runner to third, which worked out in the Waves' favor since on the very next play Zach Sullivan flied out to left fielder David DiPaola (San Carlos, Calif./Junipero Serra HS) who then gunned down Kalei Hanawahine at the plate to preserve Pepperdine's 3-2 lead.

Pepperdine scored all its runs in the first off Calvin Drummond. Brian Humphries (El Cajon, Calif./Granite Hills HS) drove in Harrison Kain (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) on a one-out single, and Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) pushed two across with one of his two hits on the day.

Drummond settled down afterward and allowed just three more hits in his 5.1 innings of work. Torero relievers Paul Paez and Paul Seward then held the Waves scoreless over the last 3.2 frames.

Vincej was one of four Waves to post a multi-hit game along with Kain, Humphries and Miles Silverstein (Bell Canyon, Calif./Calabasas HS), who led his club with three hits.

Haar had three hits to pace San Diego.

Pepperdine will look to salvage the third and final game of its series vs. San Diego Sunday at 1 p.m. Fans can listen to Leo Fletes' play-by-play broadcast for free via Wave Casts at PepperdineSports.com.
