MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine's baseball team lost 13-3 to San Diego Friday afternoon at Cunningham Stadium in the first of a three-game series between West Coast Conference rivals. Redshirt junior third baseman Miles Silverstein paced the Waves' offense with two hits and two runs.

The loss dropped Pepperdine's season record to 15-17 overall and 1-3 in the WCC, while San Diego improved to 9-22 (1-3 WCC).

The Toreros had jumped out to a 7-0 sixth-inning lead when the Waves scored the first two of their three runs, all of which were unearned. Harrison Kain (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) and Silverstein (Bell Canyon, Calif./Calabasas HS) led off the frame with infield singles, then shortstop Julian Duran made an errant throw on Brian Humphries' (El Cajon, Calif./Granite Hills HS) ground ball which allowed Kain to score from second and break Chris Jensen's bid for a shutout.

Silverstein scored two batters later after Trent Diedrich (Fresno, Calif./Bullard HS) reached on an error by third baseman Kris Bryant, and again in the eighth when Bryant made a bad throw after fielding Humphries' sacrifice hit.

The Toreros finished the game with four errors, but Pepperdine made five, which when combined with six free passes (six walks, five hit by pitch) helped contribute to a pair of very big innings for the home team.

San Diego scored four times in the fourth, first on a bases-loaded double play ball, then on an error, which was followed by a two-run double by Duran in the No. 9 spot.

After Pepperdine made it an 8-3 game, the Toreros erupted for five runs in the eighth, an inning in which they recorded just one base hit - a two-out single by Duran who finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBI. USD catcher Zach Sullivan also drove in three, and Bryant made up for his two errors with three runs and an RBI single in the sixth.

Jensen nearly went the distance for San Diego in earning his first win of the season, but stopped after 8.0 innings, 114 pitches and nine strikeouts. Michael Wagner came on to pitch a scoreless ninth.

Pepperdine and San Diego continue their series Saturday at 1 p.m. Fans can listen to Leo Fletes' play-by-play broadcast for free via Wave Casts at PepperdineSports.com.
