Round 1 Results 
TEMPE, Ariz. - Senior Taylore Karle shot a 1-over 73 to lead the Pepperdine women's golf team during the first round of the PING/ASU Invitational on Friday.
Competing without their #1 player, the Waves are in 13th place as a team after an opening-round 301. The tournament features an outstanding field, as all 12 of the teams ahead of Pepperdine are in Golfstat's top 50, while four are in the top 10 and eight are in the top 25. Play continues with single rounds on Saturday and Sunday at the par-72 Karsten Golf Course.
Pepperdine's scoring leader, sophomore Danielle Kang (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake HS), is away at the LPGA's Kraft Nabisco Championship this weekend. Kang shot back to back 77s at the first major of the season, but her score of 10-over missed the cut.
Karle (Scottsdale, Ariz./Laurel Springs Academy) helped pick up the slack with a first round that included four birdies. She stands in a tie for 24th place. Karle played her back nine with two birdies and just one bogey.
Freshman Grace Na (Alameda, Calif./Alameda HS) also had a good first round with a 2-over 74, putting her into a tie for 31st place. She had three birdies on Friday.
Junior Kaitlin Drolson (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) and freshmen Liv Cheng (Auckland, New Zealand) and Danielle Gillaspy (Santa Maria, Calif./St. Joseph's HS) all shot 77, tying them for 63rd place. Gillaspy led that group with two birdies during her round. Cheng's back nine consisted of nine consecutive pars.
