GREENVILLE, N.C. - The Pepperdine and East Carolina baseball teams split a doubleheader Saturday at Clark-LeClair Stadium. The Waves won the first game, 5-4, and lost the second, 7-4, to bring their record to 5-6 heading into a season-long 12-game homestand that starts Wednesday at 2 p.m. vs. UC Riverside.
Game One Recap
Pepperdine won the first game at ECU, 5-4, in 11 innings. Zach Vincej (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) drove in the game-winning run on a two-out infield single to third that scored Sam Meyer (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS), and then freshman reliever Matt Maurer (Medford, Ore./North Medford HS) came on to convert his first collegiate save. Maurer entered with a runner at first, but got a 6-4-3 double play ball off the bat of Corey Thompson followed by a strikeout of John Wooten.
The win was Pepperdine's first on the road and second in extra innings this season.
Vincej finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI. Meyer entered the game late as a pinch hitter and went 2-for-2 with the tie-breaking run.
Jon Moscot (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Palisades Charter HS) started and delivered a seven-inning quality start, giving up three earned runs with four strikeouts. ECU's Zach Wright hit a homer off Moscot in the second, and two more single runs against him in the sixth and seventh cut Pepperdine's lead to 4-3.
East Carolina knotted the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth on Thompson's one-out RBI single against Wave reliever Ricky Villarreal (Edinburg, Texas/Edinburg HS). Villarreal, however, pitched effective enough afterward to earn his first victory of the season.

Game Two Recap
The Waves jumped out to a 4-0 first-inning lead off ECU starter Zach Woods, who lasted a third of an inning, but they weren't able to produce anything further off Pirate relievers Brad Mincey and Seth Simmons.
Mincey shut out the Waves over 7.2 innings with three strikeouts before Simmons came on to earn his second save of the year with a 1-2-3 ninth. During this time on offense, the Pirates scored seven unanswered runs, including three in the first and the game-winning runs in the fourth.
Freshman starter Eric Karch (Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) gave up six runs on seven hits through 3.0 innings, although only four of those runs were earned. Sophomore Alex Najera (Anaheim Hills, Calif./Canyon HS) pitched the final 5.0 frames, striking out three and allowing one run on six hits.
Vincej again paced the Waves' offense, going 3-for-5 with two singles, a double and run scored. Meyer came up with the first-inning's biggest hit, driving in two with a bases-loaded single back up the middle.
Chris Amezquita (La Mirada, Calif./Servite HS) also produced a multi-hit game, ripping a double and single through three at-bats.
Pepperdine finished the game with 13 hits to go with the ten it had 10 in the first game.
