MALIBU, Calif.- The Dayton Flyers pushed across two ninth-inning runs, sending them to a 3-1 victory over the Pepperdine baseball team on a cool and cloudy afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium. The loss snapped a season-best five-game winning streak for the Waves (11-11), while Dayton improved to 10-12.

Flyer leadoff man Brian Blasik drove home the go-ahead run on a two-out single to shallow center. Senior Harrison Kain (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) charged the ball and made a strong throw home but Jimmy Roesinger was just able to evade the outreached arm of catcher Nate Johnson (Camarillo, Calif./Camarillo HS). Blasik advanced to second base during the play at the plate and scored an insurance run on C.J. Gillman's single through the right side.

Dayton's late rally saddled reliever Brian McIlhenny (Scottsdale, Ariz./Brophy College Preparatory) with his first loss of the season, and made a winner out of Mike Hauschild who improved to 4-2 following 2.0 scoreless innings of work.

Burny Mitchem started for Dayton and allowed one run on five hits and four walks through 7.0 innings. He held the Waves hitless until there were two outs in the fifth, but gave up three in the sixth, including Brian Humphries' (El Cajon, Calif./Granite Hills HS) RBI single to center that scored Kain and tied the game at 1-1.

Humphries got aboard again to start the eighth but was caught stealing third for the second out, and then Hauschild struck out Johnson for the first of his four straight Ks to end the game.

Freshman Matt Maurer (Medford, Ore./North Medford HS) lasted 6.0 innings and 100 pitches in his start for the Waves, allowing one run on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts. The lone run he surrendered came on a disputed RBI single down the left-field line that the Waves' dugout thought was foul.

Eric Karch(Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) relieved Maurer to start the seventh and held the Flyers scoreless over 1.2 innings.

The rubber game between Pepperdine and Dayton is slated for Sunday at 1 p.m. The weather.com forecast is calling for a mix of sun and clouds with a high temperature of 61 degrees.
