Pepperdine and Dayton Box Score (March 25, 2011)
MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team tied a modern program record with six stolen bases in its 9-1 victory over Dayton Friday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium. Chris Amezquita and Harrison Kain were among the Waves more aggressive thieves on the base paths as each stole two.
The win brought Pepperdine's season record back over .500 to 11-10, while Dayton dropped to 9-12. The two squads will resume their three-game series Saturday at 1 p.m.
Kain (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) consecutively stole second and third base in the third inning en route to scoring Pepperdine's go-ahead run, while Amezquita (La Mirada, Calif./Servite HS) twice swiped second base as part of a 2-for-3 day at the plate.
Kain reached base four times through five plate appearances, scored three times, and drove in one more during a four-run eighth.
Adding to Dayton's frustrations was a double steal of second and third executed by Brian Humphries (El Cajon, Calif./Granite Hills HS) and Ryan Van Amburg (Campbell, Calif./St. Francis HS) in the sixth inning. Humphries later scored on Torrey Jacoby's (Camarillo, Calif./Notre Dame (Ariz.) Preparatory) sacrifice fly to left to make it a 4-1 game.
The six steals were Pepperdine's most since an April 29, 2006 game vs. Portland. The Waves also were credited with six thefts in games vs. Northwestern (March, 2006) and San Francisco (April, 2005).
"We've been concentrating much of our practice time on the importance of executing when we have to, and the team has just shown unbelievable focus on their offensive skills," head coach Steve Rodriguez said. "The hard work has been paying off. Guys are getting into scoring position and we're driving them in."
Pepperdine's offense, which generated 12 hits and runs in all but two innings, made it an easy day on the mound for the pitching staff.
Sophomore Jon Moscot (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Palisades Charter HS) started and gave up one run through 4.0 innings with four strikeouts. Then came in Jared Lee (Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS), who in his longest outing of the year, shut down the Flyers over three innings of work despite allowing six base runners.
"Lee did a good job," added Rodriguez. "I'm not accustomed to seeing him walk that many batters, but I credit him today for being effectively wild. He competed hard and did what we needed him to do in that situation."
Lee wiggled out of a minor jam in the fifth with a 5-4-3 double play, and in the seventh was helped by catcher Trent Diedrich's (Fresno, Calif./Bullard HS) throw down to second to catch Zach Blanchette stealing. Later that frame Lee again escaped trouble after getting Zach Stewart to fly out to right with runners at the corners.
Relievers Brian McIlhenny (Scottsdale, Ariz./Brophy College Preparatory) and Michael Swanner (Cardiff, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) both pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth inning, respectively, with each facing the minimum three batters.
