SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's golf team is in fourth place and sophomore Danielle Kang is tied for sixth after Monday's first round of the Bruin Wave Invitational at Robinson Ranch Golf Club.

Co-host UCLA has opened up a sizeable lead on the par-72 Valley Course thanks to a 7-under 281. The Bruins' four scoring players all rank among the top 10 individuals.

Arizona is second but 11 strokes back at 292, followed by San Diego State at 295 and Pepperdine at 296. The second round is on Tuesday beginning at 8:30 a.m., and the third and final round is on Wednesday.

UCLA's Glory Yang and Malin Enarsson are tied for the individual lead after both shot 3-under 69s.

Kang (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake HS), who won the inaugural Bruin Wave Invitational last year, is two strokes back after a 1-under 71. She had a team-best total of five birdies during her round. Kang has recorded a below-par score in five of her 10 rounds in 2010-11.

A pair of freshmen shot 2-over 74s for the Waves. Liv Cheng (Auckland, New Zealand) and Grace Na (Alameda, Calif./Alameda HS) are tied for 17th place, and both players recorded three birdies on Monday. Senior Taylore Karle (Scottsdale, Ariz./Laurel Springs Academy) and junior Kaitlin Drolson (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) are tied for 36th place after opening-round 77s.

Two other Waves are competing as individuals. Freshman Danielle Gillaspy (Santa Maria, Calif./St. Joseph's HS) is tied for 21st place with a 75 and senior Martine de Gannes (Diego Martin, Trinidad) is tied for 69th place with an 82.

There was a 20-minute frost delay at the start of the round, but the weather quickly improved with sunny skies, a high of 60 degrees and very little wind.
