Women's Golf Opens Regional Challenge in Second Place

Round 1 Results

PALOS VERDES, Calif. - Four members of the Pepperdine women's golf team are in the top 10 after Monday's first round of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, helping the Waves into second place as a team.

Only three players posted rounds of par or better at the difficult par-71 Palos Verdes Golf Club. But Pepperdine's four scorers stayed close enough to par to give the Waves a total of 295, five strokes behind leader USC and one ahead of UCLA.

Senior Taylore Karle (Scottsdale, Ariz./Laurel Springs Academy) had the Waves' best round, a 2-over 73 that put her into a tie for fifth place. She both began and ended her round with a birdie and finished with three overall.

Three Waves are tied for ninth place after opening-round 74s: junior Kaitlin Drolson (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) and freshmen Liv Cheng (Auckland, New Zealand) and Grace Na (Alameda, Calif./Alameda HS). Cheng led all the Waves with a total of four birdies. Drolson had three and Na, making her collegiate debut, posted two.

Playing as an individual, freshman Danielle Gillaspy (Santa Maria, Calif./St. Joseph's HS) is tied for 20th place after a 76. Sophomore Danielle Kang (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake HS) is tied for 29th after a 77. Gillaspy had three birdies and Kang had two.

The second and third rounds will be played on Tuesday and Wednesday (Feb. 15-16). This is Pepperdine's first tournament of the spring season.
