Waves Struggle in Friday's Tennis Action

FLUSHING, N.Y. - Both the Pepperdine men's and women's teams played against some top-ranked talent on Friday, and despite solid play the Waves were only able to tally one singles win. Lorraine Guillermo emerged as the only student-athlete to post the "W." She and the rest of the women's squad are spending the weekend at the Mission Hills Desert Classic in Rancho Mirage, Calif.
Elsewhere in the country, Sebastian Fanselow (Essen, Germany/Kaplan Prep) and Finn Tearney (Wellington, New Zealand/Wellington College) are competing in a 32-player singles draw featuring some of the top competitors in collegiate tennis.
Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) faced Alison Ramos of USC. Ramos played mostly in the #3 and #4 spot in the lineup for the Trojans last dual season. Guillermo took the first frame, before Ramos evened the score in the second. In the third and deciding set, the freshman Wave won 6-3 to advance to the next round.
Arianna Colffer (Corona, Calif./Buena Vista), Megan Moore (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS and Tara Panu (Los Altos Hills, Calif./The Harker School) all suffered first-round losses, but will continue doubles action and consolation play on Saturday.
At the Billie Jean National Tennis Center in New York, Fanselow went toe-to-toe with #3-ranked Eric Quigley of Kentucky. Both players claimed a set by a single break to force a third frame. Quigley eventually gained the advantage, and moved on to the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships after edging Fanselow 6-4 in the final stanza.
Although playing in the consolation draw, Tearney faced an equally formidable opponent in #11-ranked Gonzolo Esobar. The top player from Texas Tech won the match 6-3, 6-4 to end the Waves run at the home of the US Open.
Members of the men's squad conclude the fall season next weekend, Nov. 11-13, at the Lakewood Ranch Clay Court Intercollegiate Classic in Sarasota, Fla.
