The Waves fell to 2-1 despite shooting 51.2% from the field, while the Roadrunners improved to 2-1 after shooting 55.6% from the field and making 10 of 17 three-pointers.
CSU Bakersfield also forced 19 turnovers and had a 28-10 advantage in points off turnovers.
"The turnovers were the difference in the game, in my opinion," Pepperdine Coach Marty Wilson said. "I thought they played tougher than us, and were tougher than us on the defensive end. They forced us to make some bad turnovers where they ran out and got some easy buckets and built some momentum, and got us rattled a little bit. That was disappointing."
Sophomore guard Nikolas Skouen (Bergen, Norway/Pratt CC) made four of five three-pointers and scored a team-high 16 points, while senior center Corbin Moore (Cypress, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) scored 15 points and pulled down nine rebounds, and senior forward Taylor Darby (San Marcos, Calif./Mission Hills HS) added 14 points.
The Waves only led once in the game, when Darby scored on the block to make the score 2-0. The Roadrunners took a 32-29 halftime lead.
Pepperdine made several pushes in the second half to try to get the lead back, but each time CSU Bakersfield had a reply.
Skouen's jumper made it 42-38 with 13:18 to play, but the Roadrunners' Ivan Matip responded immediately with a three-pointer. Freshman guard Jordan Baker (Tempe, Ariz./Tempe HS) sank a jumper to make it 45-42 with 11:30 to play, but CSUB's Zach Lamb hit a three-pointer on the other end. Another basket by Baker that cut the deficit to 48-44 with 10:10 to play, but CSUB's Mo Hughley made a lay-up on the next possession.
Hughley's basket ignited a 9-0 run that gave the Roadrunners their largest lead of the game at the time, 57-44 with less than eight minutes to play. The lead would eventually grow to 15 points.
The Waves kept at it, though, and a 9-2 run that ended on a three-pointer by sophomore forward Hector Harold (Pasadena, Calif./Northfield Mount Hermon School) pulled Pepperdine within six points at 73-67 with 31 seconds left. But the Roadrunners closed out the game by hitting their final six free throws.
Lamb led four CSUB players that reached double-figures with 18 points.
Pepperdine is in the midst of playing four of five games on the road, but the Waves' next game is back at home against Central Michigan on Monday (Nov. 21) at 7 p.m. Fans can watch the game for free via WaveCasts at www.pepperdinesports.com.
