MALIBU, Calif. - Led by Samantha Cash's 11 kills, the #18 Pepperdine women's volleyball team defeated Gonzaga in straight sets this evening inside Firestone Fieldhouse. The Waves improve to 16-5 overall and a flawless 10-0 in the West Coast Conference.
Set scores for the match were 25-17, 25-14 and 25-23 to lower the Bulldogs' season record to 7-14 and 1-9 in league play.
Cash (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy) knocked down 11 kills on a fault-free 16 attacks for a season-high .688 hitting percentage. The freshman middle blocker also contributed a match-best four blocks in addition to four assists and a dig.
Overall, Pepperdine recorded a season-high .393 clip and out-killed Gonzaga 53-29.
Kellie Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) distributed 39 assists, while picking up 12 digs.
Other top performers for the Waves included Kim Hill (Portland, Ore./Portland Christian HS) with 12 kills and Lilla Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif./Cornelia Connelly HS) with 11. Frederick also added two service aces and nine digs.
On defense, Stevi Robinson (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) paced Pepperdine with 15 digs and three aces.
Gonzaga held close with the Waves in the opening set, until 3-1 run put the score at 19-16 and the ball in the hands of Robinson at the service line. The hard-hitting senior was credited for the ace in three of the next four points, and even added a kill earned on a well placed free ball that the Bulldogs were unable to handle. A collaborative block courtesy of Hill, Frederick and Victoria Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian HS) sealed the first set 25-17.
Adelhelm helped the Waves' cause with a perfect 5-for-5 effort on the attack.
Pepperdine continued to dominate in the second frame, nailing down 17 kills compared the Bulldogs' six. With a sideout percentage of 92, the Waves did not allow Gonzaga to gather any offensive momentum and put the set away 25-14.
In the third stanza, Pepperdine built a 20-15 lead only to see the Bulldogs slowly mount a comeback. Up 24-19, the visitors erased four match points before Frederick pounded down a kill to end the contest.
Adelhelm finished the match with seven kills earned on a .462 hitting percentage, while Katie Messing (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) added six kills on a .500 success rate.
The Waves wrap up this week's action on Saturday, Oct. 29, when they tangle with Portland at 1 p.m. inside Firestone Fieldhouse.
