Round 1 Results
VAIL, Colo. - Freshman Liv Cheng fired a 1-under 71 to lead the Pepperdine women's golf team on Sunday as the Waves began their title defense at the Golfweek Conference Challenge.
After an opening-round 297, Pepperdine is in seventh place, 10 strokes back of co-leaders Tulane and Virginia. Single rounds are still to be played on Monday and Tuesday at the par-72 Red Sky Golf Club.
Cheng (Auckland, New Zealand) is tied for seventh place thanks to the first sub-par round of her collegiate career. She had two birdies on the front nine and two more on the back nine.
Senior Taylore Karle (Scottsdale, Ariz./Laurel Springs Academy) is tied for 17th place after a strong finish. She was 4-over after 13 holes but had three birdies on the final four holes, giving her a 1-over 73.
Junior Kaitlin Drolson (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) is tied for 28th place with a 75, freshman Danielle Gillaspy (Santa Maria, Calif./St. Joseph's HS) is tied for 52nd place with a 78 and senior Martine de Gannes (Diego Martin, Trinidad) is tied for 56th place with a 79.
The Waves won this event last year by one stroke over California when it was played at the Primm (Nev.) Valley Desert Resorts. Pepperdine is without sophomore Danielle Kang (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake HS), who was invited to play in this weekend's Japan Women's Open after winning the U.S. Women's Amateur this summer.
