MALIBU, Calif. - Five members of the Pepperdine women's cross country team competed strongly while surviving climbing temperatures approaching 90 degrees Saturday morning in their dual at Cal State Bakersfield.
Head coach Robert Radnoti, who is resting a bulk of his team in preparation for next month's Bronco Invitational, brought only a small group north in order to get them on the same cycle as their teammates. Many of the student-athletes competing today either missed last week's competition in Seattle or were left out of the season's first three invitationals due to various circumstances.
"I thought this race was a good opportunity for our female runners to get experience, and for me to see where some of them are at with their nagging injuries," Radnoti said. "They all ran strong today and looked comfortable doing so."
The five Waves finished as a pack from 10th to 14th place in the 23-woman field. Junior Elizabeth Coe (Fountain Valley, Calif./Fountain Valley HS) led Pepperdine with her 5K time of 19:42.50, and was followed to the finish line by sophomore Megan Doeding (19:50), junior Courtney Rolando (19:53.60), freshman Makenzie Taylor (20:20.60) and senior Mary Stuzman (20:59.50).
Arianna Celis of CSU Bakersfield won the race in 17:44.60.
The Pepperdine women's team is now off from competition until Oct. 16 when it heads to Sunnyvale, Calif., and Baylands Park for the Bronco Invitational hosted by Santa Clara. The Waves finished eighth there a year ago with senior Chelsea Wishard placing 12th overall in 17:43.
Since the Pepperdine men did not compete today as originally planned, Radnoti has added the Vanguard Invitational in Costa Mesa, Calif. on Saturday, Oct. 9 to their schedule.
