SUNNYVALE, Calif. - It was an exciting morning for the Pepperdine's women's cross country team Saturday at Baylands Park as junior Lauren Lodge (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton HS) won Santa Clara's Bronco 5K Invitational with a personal best time of 16:50.4.
Senior Chelsea Wishard (Lawai, Hawai'i/Kauai HS) also posted a solid performance with her third-place mark of 16:57.8. Both she and Lodge have finished among the top five runners at all three invitationals this season, including ones at Irvine at Washington.
"It seemed like Lolo (Lodge) led the race wire-to-wire," said head coach Robert Radnoti. "Our original race strategy for her was to pick off and pass runner over the final 1000 meters, but after she opened up a 20-meter gap on the rest of the pack all she had to do to win was maintain that pace; and it was a super one at that.
Lodge finished the course 5.6 seconds ahead than runner-up and unattached competitor Kate Niehaus.
Rounding out the top-seven for the Pepperdine women's team were Hannah DeWalt (18:08.5), Aneasha Lawrence (18:34.0), Paige Mobley (18:36.4), Adrianna Davies (18:45.5) and Emily Branch (19:04.3). This group plus Lodge and Wishard will likely represent the Waves at the West Coast Conference Championships in two weeks.
Senior Seth Allison (Canyon, Texas/Canyon HS) led the Pepperdine's men's team with an 8K time of 26:02.0. He'll be joined at the conference championships by Jordan Wozniak, Russell Mott, Jonathan Rahaeuser and Jesse Aston plus two others.
Those Waves who aren't going to WCCs will be competing next Friday at the Titan Invitational at Cal State Fullerton.
