AUBURN, Wash. - Josh Anderson and Andrew Putnam finished 1-2 to lead the Pepperdine men's golf team to a season-opening team victory at the Kikkor Golf Husky Invitational on Tuesday.
Anderson (Temecula, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS), a junior, shot a 10-under 206 (70-68-68) to finish four strokes ahead of Putnam (University Place, Wash./Life Christian Academy), a senior that recorded a 6-under 210 (73-69-68).
They helped the Waves post the second-best team score in school history, a 17-under 847 (290-276-281). Pepperdine went 12-under during the second round to take an eight-stroke lead, and today's 7-under allowed the Waves to finish seven strokes ahead of host Washington at the par-72 Washington National Golf Club.
"Even having a nine or 10-shot lead on Washington's golf course, it was never wrapped up," Pepperdine Coach John Geiberger said. "It was great for us that UW played so well and pushed us. They would get close and we kept pulling away. When all five players show up, good things happen. It was a tremendous performance."
Pepperdine flirted with the school record of 18-under at the 2007 Turtle Bay Intercollegiate and was 20-under at one point on Golfstat's live scoring, but fell just a stroke short of the mark.
It was Pepperdine's second victory at the Husky Invitational after also capturing the crown in 2000. The first tournament of the season boasted a good 14-team field that included three teams (Washington, Oregon and Texas A&M) that finished among Golfstat's top 10-rated teams in the country last year.
Anderson won his second career title after previously earning co-medalist honors at the 2010 General Hackler Championship. His final score of 10-under ties the 10th-best 54-round score in school history. He had five birdies during his 4-under 68 today.
"I played my game and didn't make many mistakes," Anderson said. "I played solid golf. The course played very long because it was wet with the rain. That helped me out because I hit it long, so it didn't bother me. It wasn't a tricky course. Iiked the course."
Putnam, competing just about a half-hour away from his hometown, posted his lowest score since spring 2009 with his total of 6-under. He had a total of seven birdies during Tuesday's round.
Senior Andrew Widmar (El Paso, Calif./Cathedral HS) earned the first top 10 finish of his career thanks to a 2-under 214 (74-67-73) that put him into a tie for 10th place. He collected three birdies on Tuesday.
Sophomore Johnny Mac Arthur (Newhall, Calif./Hart HS) tied for 28th place after his second straight par-72, giving him a 5-over 221 (77-72-72). He overcame three early bogeys with three birdies later on. Senior Austyn Karle (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Prep) tied for 40th place with an 8-over 224 (73-78-73).
"Everyone now has something to draw on for the next time," Geiberger said. "When you get into a situation where you have to finish well and you do it, that helps for the next time. The more times we have these types of situations, the better we'll be."
The Waves are next in action at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate on October 1-2 in Albuquerque, N.M.
