MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine's women's cross country team placed third of nine teams - and one spot ahead of WCC rival Gonzaga - Saturday morning at the University of Washington's Sundodger Invitational. The Waves totaled 99 points, benefiting from a pair of top-five performances by veterans Chelsea Wishard and Lauren Lodge.
Wishard (Lawai, Hawai'i/Kauai HS), a senior, placed third in the 93-woman field with a 6K time of 20:53.86, while Lodge (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton HS), a junior, posted a fifth-place mark of 20:57.79. Sandwiched in between the Waves was 2009 Gatorade National Cross Country Athlete of the Year Megan Goethals whose third-ranked Huskies won this race for the fourth consecutive year with 22 points.
UW's Lindsay Flanagan claimed the individual title with a time of 20:34.70 - 11.32 seconds ahead of the field.
"Both Chelsea and Lauren were outstanding today and I couldn't be prouder of them" head coach Robert Radnoti said. "They both went out real hard for the first mile. I think Lauren ran a 5:17 and Chelsea a 5:19 and they did a great job of keeping up with one of the best cross country teams in the nation."
The Pepperdine's men's team finished its 8K race in 10th place with 267 points. Sophomore Sean King (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill HS) led the Waves with a personal best of 25:24.29.
Washington won the men's race with 27 points and was led to the finish line by Max O'Donoghue-McDonald (24:03.63).
The Waves return to action next Saturday with a trip to CSU Bakersfield for the Roadrunner Invitational, where both Radnoti's men's and women's squads claimed last year's team titles.
