MALIBU, Calif. - JP MacDonell, who recently completed his eligibility with the Pepperdine men's water polo team, has earned a spot on the USA National Team's roster and will travel with the squad to the Volvo Cup in Hungary from Feb. 24-26.
The U.S. team is led by former Pepperdine head coach Terry Schroeder. Another former Pepperdine All-American, Jesse Smith, is also on the team. Both were part of the USA squad that won a silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
MacDonell (Redwood City, Calif./Bellarmine Prep) finished his career in the fall as a two-time All-American, making the second team in 2009 as a senior and the third team in 2008 as a junior. He led Pepperdine with 55 goals this past season and ranked third in the MPSF with 2.39 goals per game. He earned All-MPSF honors all four of his seasons with the Waves, including the first team in 2009. He finished his career with 225 goals, which is #5 all-time at Pepperdine.
MacDonell was part of the USA's World University Games team in summer 2009.
The Volvo Cup is a four-team event with the United States, Hungary, Canada and Australia.
