PALO ALTO, Calif. - Sophomores Spencer Hamby (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS) and Danny White (Oxnard, Calif./Rio Mesa HS) each scored two goals for the No. 9 Waves in their 13-7 loss to fifth-seeded UC Irvine in Saturday morning's consolation semifinal game at the MPSF Championship hosted by Stanford.
The loss dropped Pepperdine's overall record to 9-17, while the Anteaters improved to 17-8 and advanced into Sunday's fifth-place match vs. UC Santa Barbara. The Waves will face sixth-seeded Pacific in the seventh-place game tomorrow at 10 a.m.
Pepperdine outscored UC Irvine 6-4 in the second half, receiving single goals from Matt Brown (Bellevue, Wash./Brown Academy), Rex Learmouth (Orange, Calif./Villa Park HS) and Jake Schrimpf (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) along the way, but could not overcome a sizeable 9-1 halftime deficit. Brandon Johnson led the Anteaters with three goals in the win.
Goalkeepers Bence Valics (Eger Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Secondary and Bryce McLain (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Beach HS) split time in the Waves' cage and combined for 13 saves.
