Pepperdine and Nevada Box Score (Nov. 14, 2010)
RENO, Nev. - Pepperdine's women's basketball team (1-1) forced 37 Nevada (2-0) turnovers but could not overcome a poor first half of shooting during Sunday afternoon's 66-61 loss at the Lawlor Events Center. Junior guard Jazmine Jackson (Oakland, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep) scored 19 points for the second time in as many games to lead the Waves, while classmate Lauren Bell (San Bruno, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep) chipped in 10.
Both offenses struggled out of the gate and combined for 10 points when the second media time out horn sounded at the 10:53 mark of the first half. But following that break the Wolfpack hit both their free throws and Tahnee Robinson drained a 3-pointer to put Nevada up by 12 points at 15-3.
Robinson finished with a game-high 25 points and was one of two Nevada starters to post a double-double. The other was 6-0 forward Kayla Williams who pulled down 20 rebounds, including 17 off the defensive glass, and poured in 16 points.
Pepperdine whittled its first-half deficit down to five after Jackson hit a jumper with 6:37 remaining while Nevada was in the throws of a field-goal drought, but the Wolfpack didn't stay down for long. Jump shots by Nicole Williams and Marissa Hammond in the paint bookended four consecutive free throws as Nevada build its lead back up to 13.
The Waves shot 20 percent from the field in the first half on 8-of-39 shooting and entered the locker room down by eight at 28-20. Their defense, which played aggressively enough to force 18 turnovers and held the Wolfpack to 19 field-goal attempts, consequently also sent the home team to the line 16 times from where they sank 12 buckets.
For the game, Nevada converted 75 percent of its free-throw opportunities on 25-of-33 shooting.
The Waves perhaps resembled a different team in the second half to the 665 in attendance as they quickly cut Nevada's lead to three within the first 2:10. Senior Joy Lelo (La Cañada, Calif./La Cañada HS) nailed a 3-pointer on Pepperdine's opening possession and then she and Jackson hit both their free throw attempts before junior Alex Jarrell (Shelbyville, Tenn./Shelbyville HS) sank a jumped that narrowed Nevada's lead to 30-29.
The sides exchanged two more baskets over the next several minutes before the Wolfpack went on another mini-run that brought their lead back up to double digits with 11:46 remaining. But Pepperdine would not go away easily as baskets by Bell and Jackson and a free throw by sophomore T'Keyah Shealy (Englewood, Colo./Regis Jesuit HS) with 9:03 left once again made this game a one-possession affair.
The Waves closed within three twice more in the second half, but as close as they kept coming to grabbing the lead, they just couldn't string enough baskets together to put away Nevada for good.
Pepperdine, however, did keep it interesting by hitting its last three 3-pointers over the final 20 seconds - including two by Jackson - that placed the Wolfpack lead somewhat in jeopardy; but Nevada's Williams and Robinson hit their last four free throws to ice the game.
The Waves' next game will take place this Wednesday, Nov. 17 when they visit regional rival Cal State Northridge at the Matadome at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast for free via WaveCasts at PepperdineSports.com.
