Former Wave Picciolo Added To Angels' Coaching Staff

MALIBU, Calif. – The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim today announced the addition of former Pepperdine Wave and Major League infielder Rob Picciolo to their 2011 coaching staff. Piccolo will serve as bench coach to manager Mike Scioscia, who is entering his 12th season with the franchise.
Picciolo, 57, has been with the Angels organization since 2006 as the roving infield coordinator. He spent the previous 20 seasons in the San Diego organization, serving as the third base coach (2003-05), bench coach (1993-2002), first base coach (mid-1990-92), roving infield instructor (1988-1990) and minor league manager (1986-87). He played nine seasons as an infielder with Oakland (1977-82, 85), Milwaukee (1982-83) and California (1984) and was a member of 1982 A.L. Champion Brewers & 1981 A.L. Western Division Champion Athletics.
The Southern California native was drafted by Oakland in the first round (4th pick, secondary phase) of the 1975 free agent draft out of Pepperdine. He and his wife Debby have two children, Bret and Dustin, and reside in San Diego.
Picciolo appeared in 47 of 50 games during his lone season (1974) in Malibu and helped the Waves reach the NCAA District 8 Playoffs. He was inducted into the school’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 1982.
